How do I fill holes drilled in a metal door so I can paint it?

My door has metal surface, inside is made of wood. There were holes drilled through the metal surface to attach a decorative frame. We wanted to paint the door plain, so we took out the frame thus exposing the holes. Now we were wondering what is the best way to fill these holes before painting - may be fill with wood filler?

  1. Wood filler will not stay in the metal door. Yes bando would work. Of just go to your local home improvement store. They probably have other options. Try the paint section.

  2. Try a two part epoxy filler like bondo or maybe even fiberglass.  I wouldn't go wood filler because you'll probably have adhesion issues.

  3. Try an auto body filler such as Bondo.  Bondo is a 2 part epoxy that you mix, fill then hole and sand smooth, prime and paint.

  4. Common practice in construction & renovation to use auto body filler ,

(Bondo) on metal doors & bucks. it is easily finish sanded to match the surrounding area.

Any exposed bare metal gets auto primer.

The doors are cleaned ,can be  primed & painted w/ latex or oil based paint applied w/ a short nap mohair roller which leaves an almost"factory" finish.

    Best regards

  5. Get some Bondo at the local car store. Smack it on and sand it.
