I'm 20 and should probably have this figured out. But I'm working full time at about $10/hr. I'm single and live with my mom, but she doesn't claim me. I read the directions and I got a 2 but I don't think that is right and then what do I put in the box where some can put exempt?

  1. I would say a single person should be either a 1 or 0.  Personally, I always picked 1.  Odds are you should leave the exempt box blank.  It would be unusual if you met the criteria to be exempt.

  2. Leave the "exempt" box empty - you are not exempt.  That means you make so little that you won't owe any tax.  You make more than that.

Two is OK if you only have one job - you'll come out about even at the end of the year with what you owe.
