What type of training would he/she need to have?

What questions would you suggest I ask to determine their authenticity?

Links would be helpful.

Thanks

  1. Go to:

    http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/

On the side menu, click "counseling" for information.

You will find what you need there for a counselor who is credentialed, very experienced and specializes in adoption issues.

  2. Networking through local adoption agencies is a good start.  Most agencies have professionals to whom they refer clients, or have consultants who work with adoption issues and are able to work with anyone connected to adoption.  Licensed agencies provide support and counseling outside of their scope to birth parents, adoptive parents and adoptees on an as needed basis through these referrals.   Whenever seeking out counseling, make sure the counselor is licensed, as this assures you of regular training and licensure, and some recourse should you need it.  My experience is that Clinical Social Workers (who have Master's Degrees and advanced clinical training, and hold professional licenses from their state) are some of the more dedicated and knowledgeable.

Here is a long article about choosing an adoption counselor you may find helpful, too!  Good luck.

Most states require therapists to have licenses-you can check those.
