Question:

How do I find a map of the "fall line" the place where the rivers fall from the Piedmont to the tidal plain?

I can't find a good map of this zone.

People say it can be a mile wide or more in places.

I am pretty sure I am living in it right now, because it is very hilly and there are some rapids in streams near here. Immediately to the east, it gets flat.

Strictly speaking, the fall line is a line with no width, like the Continental Divide.  So you can only live on one side or the other.  In reality, the location is not that precise and you can find different locations on different maps.   So there is a gray area.  The link below shows a map for Virginia.  If you don't live in Virginia, you should be able to find a map for your area with a little searching on line.
