Question:

How do I find a sibling that was given up for adoption??

So my sister, brother and I have always felt like we had another sibling. Five years ago we were told by a family member that my father possibly had another child before us with a woman he had dated for a while. I don't know the complete story because that relative who let us know passed away 2 years ago. My sister finally asked our father to tell us the truth and he admitted that there was a good possibilty but there was no paternity test done so he was not sure. All I know is the woman's name he was dating and that he thought the child was given up for adoption. If there is anyone here on this site that knows the best way to find the brother or sister that might be related to us, please help me out. I would greatly appreciate it. =) Katie

  1. You're in a tough position.

There's really no way to know what kind of "can of worms" you might be opening, but if you are prepared to emotionally accept whatever the outcome may be, and if you are willing to put yourself out there a bit, I suggest you first locate the woman your father was dating at the time.

In all liklihood, her name may be different now, but if you have her maiden name, you can locate her by searching some of the on line databases. Just type "people finders" in your search engine and you'll find a variety to choose from, and for a nominal fee, you can get a 24 hour pass to do some digging around.

Once you locate her, I would suggest sending a letter, explaining your situation and asking her if she would be willing to help you. This is the least invasive way, and allows her a chance to  process what you are asking. There may be a chance she is already in contact, or can share some information with you.  If not, she could at least share with you the agency handling the adoption, date of birth, s*x of the child, or the state where it happened, so you could get yourself on a registry in the event your possible sibling is searching. It's a shot in the dark, but it's worth a try.

    Best of luck!

  2. Yahoo People Search!

I found my dad who I hadn't seen in years that way :)

    Good luck!

  3. Which State was she born in?  If we know that then we can get you on some relevant reunion registries for that state

  4. This could be a difficult search since the information you have is limited. The first step you could do is finding this woman. Its seems unknown if this child was even placed for adoption or even is your fathers biological child.   It could also be a long search, so have patients.

Prepare for anything it good and bad.

Type in people search in the search engine various sites will come up.

    Good luck

  5. Try adoption.com - they have a reunion registry.  Also google "birth family reunion" for several different adoption registry websites - use the free ones and input all the information you have.  You can type in your father's full name or the mother's name, to see if anyone is looking for him or her.

Be careful - your father may not want to deal with the results.  However, if no one else will help this adopted child find out about his/her birthparents, you'd be doing that child a huge favor by filling in the missing information.

    Good luck.
