Use On-Line Banking with your bank. It is the best method to keep up with your expenses and balance 24 hours a day.

Your bank will tell you what your current account balances are.

However, it's important to keep current and accurate records of your checking account and credit cards because the only thing the bank can tell you is what has cleared the bank.  They can't tell you what your balance *will* be when outstanding purchases come through.  You have to know that to prevent overdrafts ("bad checks").

If you are not confident about balancing your checkbook, make an appointment with a Customer Service person at the bank and they will teach you.
