How do I find my computer's name on the local network?

I am trying to share a file over my home network, and I don't really know how.

  1. To find your computer's name, go to start->right click my computer->properties->Computer Name.

    To share files, go to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\".  On the left side of the window there should be a tab that says "File and Folder Tasks".  Click "Share this folder", then click the check box "Share this folder on the network" (you can also click "Allow network users to change my files"), and hit apply.  Then, on your other computer, go to start->run, type in two backslashes ( \ ), followed by your computer's name (example: \\ComputerName).

    This might not work on all computers, but it does for me.
