Question:

How do I find my routers WEP key?

I was given a router by a friend a good while ago. He gave me the password and username for the router on a slip of paper. Sadly, I lost that piece of paper and my friend went into the army. I want to connect my DS to my router, but it can't connect without the WEP key. Thus, does anyone know a way I can get the WEP key? Is there a website or something?

  1. because you lost the piece of paper with the password and username, you can't login to the router to check. So you need to completely reset the device.

On the back of the router, there should be a little button or pinhole labled reset. Push that down while plugging in the power, that will reset the password to the factory default.

Depending on what type of router it is, you can google for the manual which will list the factory default password.

Usually it's login: "admin" and password: either "admin" or "password"

Once you have the login or password, you can login the router and view the settings page which allows you to see, and change the wep key.

To view the router settings page, you just go to http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 and it should display the password screen. If neither of thse addresses work you will need to track down a manual for your router.

  2. Log into your router and look under the security settings. Your WEP key should be displayed there.

If your unsure how to log into your router it would be helpful if you post which router your using. Typically you log into your router in a web browser by typing your Default Gateway in the address bar. To find out your Default Gateway, open the command prompt and type ipconfig /all

Most home routers have an IP address near the beginning of your particular subnet such as http://192.168.1.1 or something very similiar (look at your router's instruction manual or locate the IP address by searching the router model on the manufacturer's website). Different routers have different default username/password combinations, which you will definitely need to look up documentation for. Some do accept blank usernames and/or passwords, depending on the model.
