How do I find out how high my home is above sea level?

Ordanance survey is carried out before latest editions of maps are released. This will give you your height above sea level. Check a map of your locality.

Some deeds have that information.  If not, the local municipal or County Engineer should be able to provide that information.

If you have or can borrow a GPS, many units will read elevation accurate to about 50 feet.

You can also use a barometer if you know the local sea-level pressure and then calculate your elevation.

look at the contour lines on an ordinance survey map, they give the height in meters.

Maps have contour lines on them and occationally give heights above sea level the data must be available on ordinance survey maps , im sure surveyers will have this information ,there will be information at the land registry where they have plans for your house , estate, local area but im not sure exactly where to start - good question !

your local library will have maps of your area and somebody there in the reference department will help you. Or.. you could download Google Earth (lots of fun anyway) and when you hover the cursor over your house it will tell you at the bottom of the screen.

Got to admit I'm no expert- but just done my geog GCSE and have a vague memory of contour lines? Locate your home on a map and the I know the contour lines tell you how steep an area is- but I think on some maps they give you a figure of metres above sea level?

go to library/book shop find an ordnance survey map and read off the number on the brown contour nearest to your house. Or look on Environment agency website for flood warning area - see link
