My mother passed away wich promted my grand mother to change her will so that me and my siblings would recieve my mothers shares of the stock when she passes. The confusion is how many shares does she have? She has dementa and is 95 years old she told me 10,000 shares but my brother said she bought 10,000 shares in 1962 when my grand father passed away and she sold all her properties. there is a big difference in owning that many now and buying that many in 62 the stock has split 5 times since then and would be huge number by now. How do we find out how many stocks she actually owns?

  1. As you don't have a legal right to the information, you will need to obtain that information from your grandmother or from the person who is legally entrusted to make decisions for her.  They are under no obligation to provide it to you, however.

My advice:  Live like you're going to get nothing, and then if you do get something, it will be a nice bonus.  And if you don't get anything, you aren't out anything.

  2. Unless you are the administrator or executor of the estate you will not be able legally to obtain this information

If the stock is being held in physical certificate form, you could have the estate administrator/executor send a written request to the transfer agent

If the stock is being held by a broker/dealer you can send written request to the firm's compliance department

Both letters of instructions must include the social security number of the deceased,  along with any and all documentation that you have giving you (or the one making the request) the authorization to obtain such information.

  3. You have no legal right to this information.  Your only reason for knowing is that you think you will be rich and you want to fantasize about it.

Your grandmother may have a conservator (if she has dementia) who will know, but they don't have to tell you.

Besides, if she is 95, these are resources that may be spent on her behalf to pay for living expenses.  There is no requirement that she leave you anything...and the will may have no bearing if nothing is left.

  4. ask her!

  5. If you want do know this go  Stock Exchange and ask them or  ask The Financial Supervision Authority or use your mother used bank / trader /..... and ask them about  this.
