How do I find out how my GG Grandfather came to Australia?

I've been told he was a warder on a convict ship and that he came to Tasmania in about 1862. I don't really know where to start looking!

  1. If you would like to give your gg/grandfathers name and where he came from before arriving in Tasmania I may be able to help you on this one. It is okay to post his name as he passed away a long time ago.

  2. First, transportation of convicts to Australia ended in 1868, so your gg-grandfather could easily have arrived on a convict ship.

By that date about 162,000 convicts and 900,000 settlers

had arrived in Australia (inc Tasmania). Extensive passenger lists of arrivals exist, usually sorted by port, date and ship's name. Your local library may have fiche or film of these records, a good start would be to join a local family history group, also the LDS Church have 5 Family History Centres in Tasmania (see link below for addresses) these centres are free to use and the people are very helpfull, you do not have to belong to their Church and they never mention religion to you, unless you speak about it yourself, they have the largest collection of records in the world, when you find your gg-grandfather's record of entry, it will tell you where he originated and his age etc., they will then help you, if you need it, to use their records to trace his family back further.

I lived in NSW for 9 years and used the local FHC almost daily to look at film of original English records, it was much easier than actually living in England !
