How do I find out how someone died?

My grandpa died in 1991. One family member says he committed suicide and another says he didn't. How do I find out for sure? All I have is his name dob and dod

  1. Is there any other family member you could approach?


  2. if you know the city you can check the obituaries of the local paper.

    do a search for his name

    Ask family members that might have the death certificate or a copy of  the obituary.

  3. Unless you have reason to believe that either your mom or your dad is lying, then it's apparently speculation on both their parts. The truth, thus, might never be known. But you could do some research like other posters have said and check the newspapers, other family members and the death certificate. You may end up finding yourself only speculating too.

  6. I went to the County Health Department and bought a copy of my dad's Death Certificate.  

    I had to have his name, think his mom and dad's names to get the certificate.  You probably could call ahead to see what you need to go buy one.

    It will state the cause of death.

  8. well since you asked in the Religion section, i guess the only appropriate answer would be to pray for enlightenment

  9. go to the funeral home that buried him and get them to get you a copy of the death certificate.

  11. I would check the newspaper for the day after his death...and see what it said. It would probably be very vague...if he committed suicide. But I would guess you'd have to ask someone who you know, really knows the truth.  

  12. Death certificates should be a matter of public record.  They can be obtained from the courthouse in the county in which he died.

    However it only gives the cause of death (gunshot, disease, etc).  It doesn't tell who held the gun or pushed the radio in the bath.
