How do I find out if a name is registered for a ship or not?

I want to name a ship I am buying and I wanted to know if there is a database or something where I can check if the name I want to use is allready in use or available. Where can I check this?

  1. A ship is a vessel that carries passengers or freight. If you are asking about a boat name for personal use, fishing etc., they are not registered.

  2. Ship's names are duplicated hundreds of times.  The registration of boats is based on an ID number that is unique.

  6. The US Coast Guard documentation site lists all vessels registered in The US. by name.  Worldwide would be impossible to check.
