How do I find out if someone has a British Passport?

If you need to know then ask them - by e-mail if they are distant.  If they have a legal requirement to answer you (such as a financial relationship) then ask for a image of the passport - but have the attachment as a coded zipped file so no-one can "hack" it off the e-mail.
