I sent it by US Mail instead of UPS or DHL, which would have been the smart thing to do. I am trying to get some confirmation that they got it.

  1. Call IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or 1-800-829-0922

or send a fax to: Fax numbers:

    901-546-4115 or 801-620-4249

to inquire about the Form 2848. Provide a phone number so they can respond ; I doubt they will fax you your respond.

  2. If it wasn't accepted, you would have heard.

  3. The IRS has a great online communications.  go to USA.gov, Internal revenue service and follow the prompts.

  4. Now you know why the IRS says to send anything via Certified Mail or using one of the shipping companies that provides tracking and proof of delivery.  If they received it and didn't accept it, they would have been in touch.  However if they never received it, you'd hear nothing until well after the extended October 15th filing deadline -- or until you filed a tax-due return and they sent you a bill for late filing penalties on top of the late payment penalties.

Try calling them and asking if they did get it.  Be prepared for a wait though, they're sill backed up somewhat with questions about the rebates.

  5. Request an account transcript.  That will show the extension date.

You are assuming the IRS *got* the package even though you didn't use return receipt requested.
