I don't want to eat an animal that was abused before it was slaughtered. Or one that was not given any room to move around. How do I find out about the practices of meat companies?

  1. Basically, if it comes from a supermarket, it's factory farmed.  Be aware, the meat you are looking for is insanely expensive.  You find it at farmer's markets, small butchers and Whole Foods (which is also known as Whole Paycheck)

  2. Try looking around @ Peta.com

I'm sure they have the info that your looking for.

  3. I would think that slaughtering the animal is in itself abuse.

If you love/ like animals, just give it up.

But calves bred for veal have the worst life of any animal.

And I don't trust any site that tells me how "Great" their animals are treated before they're bludgeoned to death by some fancy machine.

Animals on their way to slaughter sense exactly where there going.

  4. Your best bet is to actively seek out companies that organically pasture-raise their animals. You probably won't find it in the grocery store. In fact, I can pretty much promise that you won't.

    Check out Thundering Hooves.

If you like buffalo at all, look for Wild Idea Buffalo. (I've been to the ranch... it rocks.)

If you run a search on organic and pasture-raised you will probably start to find what you're looking for. Is there a Whole Foods around you? Go to the website anyway... they have a useful section on what the labeling actually means.

  5. Actually you CAN'T find this information. Congress refused to pass the Country of Origin Labeling or COOL for meats. You can't even be sure it was raised in this country. It may have been imported on the hoof from anywhere in the world to be slaughtered.

Grocery chains buy their meats from many different slaughter facilities. Slaughter facilities buy the animals from many different feed lots. And feed lots buy their animals from many different farmers, ranchers and countries.

Peta has no clue either!! They can make guesses.
