How do I find out who's been making pranks call in the middle of the night and hang up as soon as I pick up?

This person calls my house every 30 - 40 min. starting around 4 am until 8 am. I have caller ID but it shows up as PRIVATE CALLER. My phone company can only trace the phone numbers that I've made not the incoming ones. The police department can only help me if the caller does something more than just call and hang up.

These calls are keeping my family up at night and I don't want to turn off the phone or put it in answer machine mode since I want to be available if my aging parents need to reach me in case of emergency.

We don't have enemies, I guess it's some pranksters that have nothing better to do.

I ordered a service to block it but I like to find out who this person is that's harassing me and my family.

Next time you wake up to the phone ringing and the caller id says private caller... look at your wife.. say... "cover your ears cupcake"

Blow that whistle... I'll bet they won't call back

Give your parents your mobile number (get a cheap pay as you go mobile just fot this purpose) and unplug the land phone at night.

Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done.

However, you did do the right thing by blocking 'private calls'.  This should stop the harrassing calls.  I have this same blocking on my phone line and it also helps to stop the telemarketing calls.

If your parents are in need of you, their Caller ID will not come across as 'private caller' or 'ID Blocked'.   An out of area or unknown ID will not be blocked by the service to deny those who are calling with a 'Blocked ID'.

Since you don't feel is somone with a personal vendetta against you, the calls should stop as soon as they get blocked a few times.  You've taken the 'fun' out of it and they will go find someone else to bother.

You could get a small air horn (in the marine section as WalMart) and the next time they call... give them a blast!  A whistle works well too and is less expensive.

You may need to change your number and keep it unlisted.

Tell your telephone company you are getting harassment type calls and perhaps they will not charge you for the number change.  I see you have asked the telephone company if they can put a block on "PRIVATE NUMBER" incoming calls  to your number because you are getting these calls. If the telephone company will place the block, before you do it,

ask them what incoming calls will be blocked - could affect more that those listed as PRIVATE NUMBER.  I trust the telephone company advised you can call back to that number by dialing 69 or whatever they use to call back the number last calling you.  Maybe not get an answer anyway. The police can really only put a trace on these calls if you get threaten but they probably told you that also.

Probably some kids have gotten your number and calling you.

If they are not threatening you or your family, chances are you will not legally be able to trace them. If they are, law enforcement can force the identity from the phone company.

Meanwhile, most phone services allow you to block non identifying callers, I think using *69 or #69. Check with your phone company. You can reverse that option easily when desired.

The only thing I can think of is to say "wait a sec" and think of some question to ask them and/or cuss them out long enough for the cops to get a track.
