Depends on where you are flying from. I recommend the usual suspects, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc., and also the major airlines that service Italy -- and their websites, like American, Alitalia, etc.

There are very few deals May- September. Prices drop almost 50% after that. During the top season it's anywhere from $1000 to $1400 for coach and in the fall and winter $700 tix can be found. If you are willing to work at it, some European carriers have great deals to their capital cities during the fall, and then you have to find a good fare from there to Italy and back.
