Question:

How do I find the end of the Earth?

How do I find a point on the Earth's surface which (relative to my starting point) is at a maximum distance from where I started? Can I figure this out by latitude and longitude? If my starting point is, for example somewhere in Brazil the furthest point would be somewhere in Australia?

When I reach that point does that mean that any direction I travel, east, west, north or south I will be heading back toward my starting point?

  1. Find the point on the globe 180 degrees of longitude from your current location, going east or west does not matter. Find a spot on the opposite side of the Equator with the same latitude.  That will put you at your antipodal point.

  2. use Lat and Long...

    Chicago 41°53′0″N, 87°39′0″W

Opposite end o' the world, subtract from the Latitude from 90 and change the sign, the subrtact the longitude from 180 and change signs...

48*07'0"S, 92*21'0"E, the middle of the indian ocean..

    Latitude: -48° 7 Min. 0 Sec.

    Longitude: 92° 21 Min. 0 Sec.

    Update: Rio de Janeiro Latitude: 22° 53' 60 S, Longitude: 43° 13' 60 W

    Opposite: Latitude: 37° 06' 00 N, Longitude: 16° 46' 00 E

The Ionian Sea, just East of Italy

  3. I'm sorry I don't know.

  4. Since the earth is spherical, all you have to do is take any two (or more) compass directions & wherever they intersect on the other side would be the furthest point. Keep in mind that the compass direction will gradually become the opposite. When you reach that point, you would have to maintain course to reach your starting point.

Edit: oops - wrong answer - east & west won't take you to the furthest point because they don't intersect with any axis like north & south do. Instead, go north (or south) and then pick a random point on the equator and head for that & maintain course. Where THOSE lines intersect will be the furthest point - sorry about that.

Also, Brazil is in the Southern hemisphere, so the furthest point from it would be in the Northern hemisphere (not Australia - which is in the Southern hemisphere too).
