  1. You won't now. Local tax offices (what ones there are left) no longer take phone calls. There won't be any telephone directory entries for them. Calls are now dealt with by call centres with heavy targets to get through. I wouldn't bother.

You may be able to deal with it via your employer. When you say you are a student, is this job only for the summer vacation? If so, employer should give you form P38S, which you should sign. You should then get your wages paid tax-free, although if you earn over £90 a week, you will get National Insurance deductions.

If this job is permanent, albeit part-time, employer should ask you to sign a form P46, which he will complete. You can indicate on there that it's your first job, and he should then pay you on a cumulative basis.

In either case, he should make any refund due to you through your wage packet. If he doesn't know what he is doing, find out the name and reference number of his tax office, download form P91 from www.hmrc/p91, complete back to 6th April last (even the full-time education bits). Send to tax office, and ask for a cumulative code to be issued. No reason then why he can't make your refund.

  2. You should contact your nearest tax office. If you  aren't registered there they should be able to re-direct you - however as this is your first job there shouldn't be any problems.

If you have a payslip you can look up the number here, using either your employer's reference or the 3-digit tax office code:

If you don't you can search here for your nearest officeL:

You will need your NI number and personal details such as your home address to hand before you call. They are usualyl pretty helpful once you get through to the right place.

However please also note students are not exempt from income tax. They don't usually pay it as they are below the earning threshold (your personal allowance) which is currently £5,435 per year. This usually means you can earn £105 a week before tax so if you earnt more you may need to pay tax. If it is only a summer job you will be taxed as if you work there all year round - you will either have to claim the tax back later or talk to HMRC about other options.

  3. look in your local phone book

  4. Each Town look in telephone directory

  5. Ask your Employer who should be able to give you the company tax reference and a phone number.
