  1. All student grants and scholarship aid are non-taxable income, so long as you are a candidate for a degree at an eligible educational institution, and all of the money was used tuition and fees, and books, supplies and equipment that were required of all students in your program.

You must claim as taxable any portions that were used to pay for "incidental" expenses, which include room and board, travel and any non-required (optional) equipment you may have purchased, and, you must report as taxable any amounts that were paid to you in exchange for past, current or future teaching or research services that you provided.

You must also report as taxable income any scholarships that you "won" in a prize or competition.

The tax booklet you need to refer to is Publication 970 (attached below)

You're looking for Box 5 of the IRS Form 1098-T that was provided to you by your college or university. You should be able to find this information on the financial aid portion of your school's website (once you log in).

I'm not sure from your question whether you're looking for information that you previously reported to the IRS (but you can't find it in your records), or if you're trying to determine what information the IRS has received from other sources about your scholarship funds. Either way, your school's financial aid office should have that data for you, and they are your best possible reference.

    Good luck!
