One of the walls has two windows. I am putting up shelves along the wall near the ceiling, and need to find where to s***w in the braces.

  1. They make studfinders that you can buy at the hardware store.

If you don't want to do that, you have to tap gently on the sheetrock, until you hear a sold 'thud' instead of a hollow one.

But this is easy to s***w up, unless you're really experienced.

  2. studs are spaced every 16 inches on center.....so u need to find the center of 1 stud then to the left and right of that 16 inches over should be the center of another stud...sometimes u can find a stud by looking for any place where a nail has pop through the drywall....or to the left or right side of a switch or plug there is a stud holding the elec box.....u can find out which side the stud is on by removing the face cover and seeing if u can see the stud ( from there a stud is every 16 " ) or get yourself a stud finder....run it over the surface and every time the light comes on u found a stud

  3. with a stud finder

  4. Standard wall studs are either 16" or 24" on center. Measure from a corner. Also tapping on the wall will produce a hollow or solid sound, solid being where the stud is.

  5. You will definitely have studs up both sides of the windows but these won't be on any particular spacing. Also the 16/24 thing usually only works from an outside corner. A good clue for a starting point is one side or the other of every electrical outlet should have a stud. Then do a 16/24" layout.
