How do I finish the last shingle row of a shed roof?

I have rebuilt a breezeway between the house and garage, replacing the A roof with a shed roof. How do I finish off the last row of shingles at the top of the shed roof? Do I simply tar it to excess? Is there a cap of some kind I can buy? Is there a special piece of flashing to finish this off? I know this needs to be sealed to keep wind from pealing the top layer of shingles off and to keep any/all rain out from underneath the shingles.

  1. There is 2 ways u can do it.  1- Buy some nice caps for the top.  2.  Use the same shingles,  cut it into 3-pieces and overlap them to form a cap.

  2. There's many different ways of doing it.........you can put a colored metal, wrap around cap on it....myself I don't like metals but you can tar the last row on and nail right through the shingles....in this case I let them hang over anywhere from 1" to an 11/2" and it will sag a quarter of an inch and not allow the wind to blow rain under. You can actually make a hip and ridge look by cutting your shingles your own preferred size from scrap....snap a chalk line on your fascia board and keep it nice and staight....and lap the shingles away from the weather. This is another way to have a cute look. Wish I could see exactly what you have....there are many ways to do it. These should be the best without seeing it........all the best.

  3. there called ridge caps!
