Question:

How do I fit a door into a plywood wall?

Under the stairs in my house is a plywood wall which has been wallpapered over. I am wanting to cut a hole in it and fit a door so that I can use the space for storage. The wall measures approximately 198cms x 70cms (78" x 27") so it would need to be a pretty small door. I had in mind to look for a louvre door. I have hung doors and am quite diy savvy but I have never built a door frame before and I want to make sure it doesn't end up looking a mess.

  1. if you don`t know then the project is to big for you so get some one to do it for you

  2. Cut a hole just a bit bigger than the actual door.  Use some 1 by's and wala...A door!

  3. This is a fairly simple project but the details will depend on certain aspects of it and where as you've done it before, the only thing you really need to figure out is how to build the frame,  Here's a couple a sights that can help.....................

  4. After cutting the hole (Just slightly larger than the door)you will have to build a frame on the inside 2"x1" will do the job. s***w and glue it from the outside.  You can then hang the door. You could use flap hinges to make life easy! Finish the surround with architrave.

  5. Here is an idea.

    Step 1. Mark out the space you need to get in and out.

    Step 2. Cut that out with a jig saw. (No wobbly bits}

    Step 3. Build the door frame inside (under) the stair space. With as much support as you can find, the two uprights need to be secure top and bottom, then the cross sections can be fixed to the uprights.

    Step 4. Now this bit needs careful attention, the frame must be flush with the ply you have left, and overlap enough in the door area to make a nice snug fit for your new piece of ply. This new piece will of course need to be the same thickness as your existing ply.

    Step 5. The new frame you have built will support your hinges, and door catch, it will also help support the existing ply.

                                  Job done?

  6. I think I would get the door you want first, then build a frame for said door making it a pre-hung door. Then you can cut the hole and hang it like any other pre-hung door. It's a snap.
