How do I fix a 30+ year old lawn that is very bumpy due to erosion?

Mowing is difficult due to channels and holes everywhere. The grass mostly hides these channels/holes from view. owever, they are quite noticeable when walking or mowing. Should I just spread a layer of dirt then add seed, or, should I remove all the grass then smooth the dirt then reseed?

  1. Personally - i'd hire a rotorvator, and a good old fashioned lawn roller - then turf the lot!!

  2. Wait til it's a damp and get a lawn roller. You might need to do this 4 or 5 times but you can press it out.

  3. Rent a roto tiller and till up the messed up area and remove the rocks (if any).  Spread some composted manure, a bag of sand if you have clayish soil, and some top soil.  Retill the area to incorporate the new materials.  Tamp the area flat making adjustments with a rake.  Seed the area and cover with straw to keep the birds from eating up all the seed.   Keep the area watered for two weeks and you will have a flatter lawn.

  4. Put top soil over the holes and if their deep holes then put saud(spelling?)down too.If they aren't too deep then just put top soil over the holes and rake the area with the flat side(way easier then toothed side) so that grass is coming from the dirt, doesn't have to be all the grass just a few blades to make sure the grass will grow through it,otherwise it'll just die.Water it down and just wait.

Removing all would be alot harder then adding unless I am underestimating your situation.Although I think just adding top soil and raking would do the trick,I don't think you have a battleground as your lawn lol.
