Question:

How do I fix a leak coming from behind the washer?

I was doing my laundry earlier this evening and i noticed there is a leak coming from behind the wall. Water started leaking through the wall when the washer gets to the "drain" cycle... (machine getting rid of water) I don't want to call a repair man unless I really, really have to. Is this something that I can fix myself? What steps do I take to get this problem fix?

  1. this JUST happened to me last night

i had to get a bunch of towels and block whereever the water was coming out

then take a bowl or cup and scoop the water out of the washer or all the water will just leak through.

we didnt call the repair man yet,but i think its time to get a new washer.

  2. I don't have much info to go off of , but locate the leak, have the washer turned off after locating the leak. Cut out the bad areas, get some PVC glue and primer and the fittings you need to make the same drain afterwords. Then redo the error. On PVC you apply primer to the fitting and the pipe. Then glue to both and put the two parts together and twist 90 degrees and hold together for 30 seconds. repeat until finished

  3. Make sure that the supply hoses aren't damaged. Make sure that the drain hose isn't damaged. Make sure that the standpipe(the pipe that the washer drains into) isn't damaged. Make sure that the water lines aren't broken.

  4. call to thechnicians

  5. unless you are good at home construction--you need to hire someone--this is a significant repair--

if the washer isn't in the basement--be  careful---the water can cause the floor/ceiling to cave in--do not use it anymore...

to start with-you will need to rip open the wall--and tehan you willl need to repalce a joint or a pipe

  6. Pull it away from the wall and check to see if the waste water drain is clogged.  If it is, get a clothes hanger and try to open it up or pour liquid plumber in it.  If it's not the drain then see if it's leaking from the water hose connected to the faucet.  If it's leaking there, unscrew the hose and take out the little round rubber insert and take it to the hardware store and buy a new one for about ten cents and replace it.  s***w the hose back on tight.  Use a crescent wrench or a vise-grip to tighten it.  Don't try to tighten it with just your hand.

  7. if you cannot see water overflowing from the standpipe <where the washing machine discharge pipe goes> opening, then you probably have a problem with the pipe itself.

first i suggest watching the pipe at the wall.  it may be overflowing while in "drain cycle".  if this is the case, you need to snake the drain.

if not, then you'll have to open the wall and repair the pipe. <standpipe>

  8. Hire a repair man to do it.

  9. My guess is that you have a clogged drain pipe.I would get out the auger and snake out the drain pipe. Its really very simple to do own your own. You can pick up a 'snake ' for about $15.00. Start right behind your washer in the drain-pipe.Go slowly with the auger.Place it in the drain pipe, maybe a few feet, turn the auger clockwise until you resistance, slowly feed a bit more into the drain, keep feeding it  in to you go the length of the auger.Don't rush it.Back it up if it doesn't feel right. wind it back alittle and then try to feed it a little more. Having control is important. You don't want an excess of the snake flopping around inside the pipe. good luck!

  10. quickly find the main shutoff valve or the hot and cold shut off valves behind the machine..turn it off. double check where the leak is coming from ..it might be from the hose with holes or loose hose fittings ..old water pump wears out too...water pump cost around $50.00 ...do it yourself saves you money..

  11. I don't have the entire answer I don't think , but the first thing I would do is check the lint trap in the washer and see if it is plugged up. Sometimes it is under the agitator . You may have to get on line and find the model or your washer to find out where it is located , but these do get plugged sometimes and cause problems . Another thing you can do is check the back of the washer when it runs that cycle and see if it is coming thru the hoses where they connect . It could just be a bad rubber washer , or even a bad hose. Easy fix . What is behind the wall ? A drain . Piping? Hope some of this helps....HUgs..MJ
