We're moving out of the house we've been renting. A few weeks ago, our son slid down the 40 year old glossy walnut banister with a belt on, leaving a long scratch. Can we fix it?

  1. Old English makes scratch cover/polish in different shades.  I've used it on an antique bedroom set (mahogany) and can't even see the scratches.  We also have a light oak color rocking chair that ended up with some scratches - - the Old English worked again.

  2. there is a walnut colored crayon for furniture scratches made

  3. if you are renting use either a fill stick or a marker...

there are better ways to fix it but if you are just looking to get back your deposit that will do it...

  4. Try buying Old English polish from your local supermarket or go the hardware store and ask them.    This won't fill in the scratch, but it will color it so that it blends in with the finish.

  5. Hardware store's have several possible solutions for this problem...My best is Old English  Products..the are pr oven to be easy to use and gets job done....good luck,,

  6. depending on the depth of the scratch your local hardware store may have a scratch pencil they look like over sized crayon that fills in the scratch and come in different colors. if to deep may take sanding and staining

  7. If the wood is gouged get some walnut furniture crayon, fill the scratch and then polish the whole banister with something like Old English.

If it isn't gouged, there are polishes with dark stain added or you could use dark brown shoe polish.  Make sure you do the whole banister after the stain is repaired.
