Question:

How do I fix drywall?

I accidentally kicked a hole in the wall and I have to fix it. It's one inch from the corner of the room and on the other side of the hole there is a doorpost/doorway. This creates a problem for fitting a bevel in there so that I can trace a square around it and cut it out. Is there any kind of technique or tool I can use to fix a hole that is 5 1/2" X 3" while working around these limitations?

  1. Here is some tips to repairing a hole in drywall....

  2. A really easy way to do this is to put crumpled up newspaper in the hole (push it in far enough to be even with the wall).  At any home improvement store you can buy this mesh drywall tape to put over the hole,  (has a sticky side) then add your drywall mud.  Once dry, lightly sand and paint over.  You can actually do all of this within a day (allowing time for the mud to dry - can even buy quickset mud that is dry in about 30 minutes)

  3. Purchase some sheet rock compound, it comes in quart and pint containers.   Buy a 4 inch putty knife and a 6 inch x 6 inch piece of plastic window screen. Also pick up a piece of #60 grit sand paper.

put a thin coat of sheet rock compound around the hole. Stick the screen over the hole and use the putty knife to press it into the sheetrock coumpound. Apply a layer of compound over the screen.   Let it dry throughly.

Lightly sand the rough spots off of the dry compound. Add a second coat as moothly as possible, filling in crevases and holes in the first dry layer.  Let it dry throughly again.

Sand smooth.  Take a stiff bristled brush and dip it into the sheet rock compound. Hold the brush near the repair area and slide the palm of your hand over the bristles. This will make the brush flip the compound onto the repaired area. Leave the lumps flipped onto the wall to dry if you have a bumpy textured wall.

If you have a knock down or stucco texture wall, wait until the lumps are about half dry and then smooth the tops with the putty knife.

Let dry and paint, you will never know the damage occurred.
