I live in a 200 yr old house that has copper plumbing and an artisan well, I was told. My problem is that I have low water pressure in my shower and when I turn on the hot water. Also, the hot water isn't overly hot, you can shower with just that on. How do I fix these?

  1. to answer this properly one would need to know what kind of shower faucet you have ? is it single handle  ? two or three handles ?  we would also need to know what is your source of hot water ?  An water heater that is gas ? electric  ? or maybe a coil in your boiler ? could be many problems but more info would surely narrow down the ability to help .

  2. To fix the hot water issue, most water heaters have a little k**b on them that allows you to adjust the maximum temperature of the water.  Yours may just be turned all the way down.  You can usually find it on the hot water pipe that leads out of the heater.

The pressure issue may also be your heater.  Check to see if any of the valves are partially closed.  If not, you may have blockage in one of your pipes.  If it's just the hot water and it's just in your shower (that is, everything else is fine), you might be wise to shut off the water, take off the shower head, and clean the hot water pipe.  It's tough because you can't see what you're doing, but it's cheaper than a repairman.

  3. Add a pressure pump

  4. I'm only assuming that your talking about using the pressure that's in the well for pressure, right ?

Your going to have to add a pressure pump and tank to your water supply. Possibly the water level has dropped due to drought or some other force. It may come back at which time the pump can be disconnected until you need it again.
