How do I fix memory card error and retrieve pics?

pics of baby born in OR. Saw them on LCD screen afterwards. Then panasonic LZ8 show message "memory card error format this card? had used card before and downloaded pics on computer no problem. gave up. said yes to format card. received message "memory card error. please check card" R pics still on there? why did card just stop working? bad card or bad camera
