How do I fix "Your explorer settop is NOT AUTHORIZED for use" error message?

I have a scientific atlanta explorer 3250hd box that I often leave unplugged for long periods of time due to the shortage of outlets in my room. When I do want to use it, i get that error message. The last time the cable company had to come to fix it. How can i do this myself and why does this happen?
