I own a 1995 lincoln towncar. I've had this car for a while now. A few weeks ago, the suspension started failing. It would work for a couple days, then stop working for another few days. About a week ago it just didint work anymore. Its been like that since. I know the suspension is supposed to start everytime you turn the car on, and disinflate when you turn it off. It stopped comepletely. whats wrong with it?

  1. those systems are known for that, it might be the air pump, which is not so bad to repalce..to replace the system can cost a couple thousand..just have coil shoucks put on..it comes in a kit..

  2. there is lot's that could be wrong with it you have a couple of options you can work on it yourself if you are mechanically incline or pay big bucks to have it fixed or convert it over to coil springs

  3. Ahhhh, the old Air Suspension issue rises again. You may be in luck, sounds as if the issue may be with the compressor motor or a poor quality electrical connection both of which are relatively easy and cheap to address. These systems are prone to failure due to their constant operation of rising and lowering each time the car is started and shut off. If the issue is with an actual leak then I would just swap out the air bags for a traditional suspension, but hopefully it is only a minor power or compressor problem. I have a 92 Town Car the fortunately had the air systems fail with the original owner who had the entire system dealer repaired for nearly $2k Good Luck!

  4. Check and clean the fuse and if any type of relay in the suspension system clean its pins or contacts with fine sandpaper or small wire brush or a file.

I highly suspect that that vehicle due to it's age probably has bad connections or contacts or bad or faulty grounds or wiring in the suspension control system.Try following all the wiring that is involved in that system and then clean any plug in contacts or connections it has throughout it's wiring system.

These systems should have an air pump that may have bad connections especially its ground.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way it might help to find a good service manual for that vehicle or go to a car parts store that offers free print outs of such info. Also if I were you I'd over haul the vehicles charging system contacts , engine ground, battery alternator and starter connections too.I think you'll find that if pump is no good you can pick one up cheap at a big do it yourself auto wreckers.

  5. You rip those stupid cheap low quality airbags and the air compressor out from under the car and you swap in coil springs from a Crown Victoria.

    No change in ride quality!

Saves you at least $1000 dollars!

My mechanic friend did this for another friend and his mom's 92 Crown Vic with that same crappy airbag suspension.

Car still rode like a dream.

  6. It shouldn't deflate when you shut down. That tells me you have a leak thats causing the compressor to run way too often. Replacement parts for a 95 are available from the dealer. If you can find a mech who can chew gum and walk in a straight line at the same time, it should be no great mystery for him/her to repair. The air suspention on these cars is much cheaper to repair than the long term damage done to the car by the neanderthal coil spring conversions you hear about. If one wants coil springs, one should purchase a lesser car....
