I live in the west where we have all sorts of thorny flora and I ride a mountain bike on trails.

  1. Depends on the tire.  One is to buy tires with some sort of belt inside that resists punctures.  Another option is they sell these plastic strips that go inside the tire, between the inside of the tire and the inner tube, and these resist puncturing too.  But just for extra protection, you may want to get a tube of green Slime to put into the tube before inflating it all the way.  This will help seal holes in the sidewall.  If all else fails, you could always stuff the tire with dead leaves and limp back.

  2. You could install solid rubber inner tubes.  The ride is kind of hard but you'll never go flat.

Or you could use Slime which quickly seals any punctures and works really well while maintaining the regular feel of regular inner tubes.

  3. You may want to put on a pair of Mr. Tuffy tire liners and dose the tubes with Slime.  They'll add weight to your tires and make them a little less responsive, but not having to go nuts with the patch kit will make your life a little easier.

  4. well you can't completely flat proof a tire but the best thing you can get is a Kevlar tire which is the best you can get
