Question:

How do I frame for a transom window?

I have a standard front door that needs to be replaced and want to install a 4 pane transom window with the new door. We have 8' ceilings so it will be tight , but other homes in our neighborhood have them. What is involved in framing for a transom over the door. I know the header is too low now, but does it go up into where the ceiling joist are? Is is more than I want to attempt?

  1. This is a fairly hard thing for the do-it-yourselfer.

Other homes that were built with the transom, probably had a header flush with the upper plate in the wall. You will have to find out what size header is requirred for your area, then see if there is enough room left. You could use a smaller header if you used steel, or wood with a flitch plate.

If you have Home Depot or Lowes in your area, ask them what is requirred. You can order a new door with the transom already attached, which will save a small amount of room. Good Luck with the project. 7/31
