How do I free up space on my ipod nano?

Question

In itunes I click the ipod on the left hand side list to drop down the contents on my ipod. Then I highlight and delete the songs I want gone. However, this does not reflect on the capacity of my ipod. The point is I want to free up space so I can add different songs and it's just not happening.

have you tried deleting them from the ipod itself
