  1. This is the most common problem with ALL Blu-ray Disc players.  Manufacturers are unclear in their setup instructions and virtually NO retailer has their Blu-ray display configured correctly for true 5.1 "uncompressed" audio demonstrations.

Your first step should be to download the latest "firmware upgrade" for your make and model from Samsung's website (if you haven't already).  This will make sure your player will internally decode the most current surround formats (DolbyTrueHD).  Click right here for that link: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downlo...

After you've done that, the connection of your Blu-ray Disc player to your Home Theater is key.  It's easier to show you than tell you.  Click right here: http://www.avtruths.com/uncompressed.htm...

If your receiver doesn't have the "5.1 Analog Input" then the rest of this response doesn't apply.  But if it does, and you've hooked it up properly, then there's one more thing you'll have to do (well, two more).  The first of which is go into the Samsung's setup menu (specifically the "Audio" section) and configure the output to multi-channel, then adjust the speaker setup to match your living room.  When using the 5.1 analog inputs on ANY receiver, the Blu-ray player now controls all your speaker settings (volume and distance).  Make sure to choose "small" for all your speakers and "yes" for the sub.

The last (and most over-looked) thing you'll need to take care of pertains to each individual Blu-ray Disc you put in your Samsung.  Most movies default the the LOWEST quality audio selection.  You'll have to go into each title's "audio menu" before pressing "play" and select "Uncompressed 5.1" or "DolbyTrueHD".  Unfortunately, your model of Blu-ray Disc player can't decode "DTSHD Master Audio" without watering it down to standard "DTS" before sending out to your amp and speakers.  And sadly, not all Blu-ray Discs offer High-Resolution (DolbyTrueHD/DTSHD Master Audio) audio.  Some movie studios simply transfer the audio track from the original DVD release.

  2. First, you have to have a 5.1 source playing in the BluRay for it to send a 5.1 signal to your AVR. Not every DVD (not even close) has 5.1 sound. What kind of cables are you using to hook the Samsung up to your AVR? What is the make and model of your AVR?
