How do I get Command Prompt to recognize a micro controler plugged...?

into the USB port of my computer? Im using a usb-serial converter but Im pretty sure I downloaded the driver for it. But when I try to put a program on the microcontroller, it says the path can't be found or something about com-1/ Error 1

    try com 2 do you have to do it in command theres a brillant program called Progpic2 made by VELLEMAN for there boards and also a MPLAB IDE v8.10 and that reconize nearly every board there is i cant be of much help to you but i will say if the program came with the board and the board designed to be serial its probs looking for it on the serial ports and since it runs in cmd it probs writen for dos meaning dont have control over the usb any way just hope the usb serial converter is assigned a com in device manger

    if you could provide a bit more infomation such as the actual board model ur using il have a look round see if theres any thing else u could try

    p.s look in device manager in system to see the com number its been assigned as should say somthing like

    comunication port (com1)

    printer port(lpt1)

    usb serial controler(com 3)

    im presuming iv never actuly use a usb serial convert but hope windows asigned it
