How do I get DVD clips from a DVD onto my laptop??

You would need to "rip" the DVD for back up reasons only. The MPAA doesn't like people messing with this stuff as you might imagine. From there you would need to convert the files into an editable video format which is another process to mess with. There are several applications that do this just search for DVD ripping and you will find all sorts of options. There are too many to run through here, but your level of technical understanding and hardware will determine the best option for you.
