Question:

How do I get Java Moss to float?

I bought some Java Moss for my fish tank because I was told it would float at the top and would be great for guppy fry to hide in to avoid being eaten. Unfortunately, it all sinks and just sits on the bottom of the tank. Is it supposed to float? My water quality is good and I do regular water changes. Does anyone else have this problem?

If I can't get it to float, is there another type of live plant I could use that would float?

  1. Java moss doesn't float.  It attaches itself to the gravel or anything else it can grab.  Hornwort is a good floating plant.  The fry will hide in a good catch of java moss on the bottom as well so don't give up on it.  The moss grows best if attached to a piece of driftwood.
