Question:

How do I get Windows Update to stop pushing Media Player security fixes on me?

I've recently uninstalled Windows Media Player and its security updates from my computer (Win 2000) through the Add/Remove Programs feature, but the automatic update notifications keep on coming for Media Player security fixes.

The FAQs for these updates on the Windows website don't list my OS as one that is vulnerable.

How do I let the updater know I no longer have WMP? Do I need to make a registry edit?

  1. You could play with the registry.....it can be dangerous though. You could also try this:

When you go to the Win Update site, and it shows you the update for your computer, you should see a small box with a "plus" sign in it. Click on it, and look pass the explanation and you should see a line with a box that says something along the lines of " Click here to hide this update" This way Windows Update should hide the update from your system. It's a bit safer than playing with the registry.
