  1. Do you mean an on-air DJ at a commercial radio station? Last I looked, as long as there is a licensed operator on the premises while you're on the air you do not need a license. If there is not, you will need at least a Third Class broadcast license. This is if I remember correctly and things haven't changed - a quick search of the FCC site was not helpful.

You can take the Third Class test administered by the FCC. There is also a study guide you should read before hand. Depending on more complicated factors (mostly to do with the station, its power, when you work and with whom) you may need a higher grade of license.

Perhaps someone else will post a better answer - where's Gearbox when you need him ;<)

This I do know, the answer above me is incorrect, except that you should have a business license if you hire yourself out as a mobile DJ. You do not need a college degree, nor any of the other things mentioned in that answer.

  2. You have to go to colege and get a degree/diploma in Radio Broadcasting.

If you just want to DJ at a bar or something you don't need a license i did it for many years if you want to be on the radio yoiu need a piece of paper from a college.

To start your own DJ service to do school dances and what not you need a entertainment license and a registered name for your company.

  3. In the US there is no requirement for anyone at a radio station to have any form of FCC license.  Many dj's have College degrees, many more do not.  There are some fair radio schools that will teach the mechanics, but rarely teach the real bread and butter.  You learn that on the job, starting in smaller stations and working your way up.  Watch the pros that you admire, learn from them but develop your own style.  The old 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class licenses are gone for 20 years.  a General Radio Telephone license is a good idea for those wanting to be radio engineers, but it's not really needed in broadcast radio anymore.
