You need to get right settings before burning...

I don't know which burner software you use. I use wondershare DVD burner, It burn video to DVD directly, and the burned DVD could be played on DVD player very well.

Sounds like you have an older model player ( 4 years or older ). Many inexpensive brands cannot read some formats of burned disks.  You may need to replace the player with a new unit that shows on its box that it reads all formats ( R-, R+, RW, etc.  These formats will be able to be read by most new players.
