Question:

How do I get a car inspected and or looked over by a mechanic of my choice?

I am purchasing a used car and although the dealers and privates sellers say it is State inspected, I want my own guy to check it out. I also want him to check if there are any problems that the seller isn't disclosing to me. Now my question is how do I get the vehicle checked?

Does my mechanic go to the dealer/private seller. Or does the dealer/private seller transport the vehicle to the mechanic shop? If so do I pay for transporting the vehicle. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. this is my first car so I am very nervous.

Thanks

  1. If its a dealer, they will not let you take the car off the lot, so you have to deal with their mechanics. Ask for the service record for the car, to see what the records state

private seller - have the private seller bring the car to the mechanic you trust, or have your mechanic accompany you when you go to look at the car. let him/her test drive, and have a look under the hood etc.

  2. depends how far is the car located from a mechanic or shop that you want to inspect it?

the easy way is to have the owner drive the car to the shop.

if the place is busy offer to drive the owner back to his house and or pay him for the gas.
