It costs $50 and it takes about 3 months for the plate to be manufactured.

If you don't want to pay the fee for a vanity plate or wait for it to be made, then some car dealerships are "full-service", meaning that they will provide you with a license plate. In this case they already have a bunch of plates in their inventory, so for example if your favorite number is 5 and you want a plate that has a 5 in it somewhere, I'm sure they would let you pick from what they have available.
