Question:

How do I get a credit card company to remove some late fees and interest?

I had this credit card a couple of years ago, and when I got married and moved out of state, I notified them of my change in address. I did not realize that there was a balance on the card of abt $300. I have not heard from them since then. Now, I just discovered that this was turned over to a collection agency and they want $990! Or, they are telling me I can settle for $660 but it will remain on my credit report. They told me that they never remove any interest or late fees. Is this true??Is there anything I can do???Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Once a debt has been transferred to a collection agency, the card company has nothing more to do with it; you have to deal directly with the collection agency.

I would just pay it off; you got a pretty good deal for the amount of time the debt has been late.

PS--They can do nothing about removing it from your credit report.

  2. That sounds like a good deal, you should take it and not to let your credit being ruining any more. That is true, I hardly heard the collection agency lower the interest or late fee. Good luck!

  3. They   sometimes  do  if  it  is  the  first  month  it  is  overdue ,

Like  you  move  in  june ,  miss  the july  bill  and  have  a  late  fee   in   aug .

Then ,  if  you  call  in  aug ,  and  since  you  Just  had  a  change  of  address   and

If   you  were   Never  late  before ,

They  often   cancel  late  fees .

A   Couple  of  YEARS   ago  ?

    Hahahahahahahahahahah .   .   .

OK ,  now  you  made  me  fall  out  my  chair  laughing .

Thanks  for  the  funny  tho  .    .    .

  4. Unfortunately not much you can do.  When you move you're supposed to fill out a change of address form with the postal service so that all your old mail is forwarded to your new address (just in case there were companies or bills you forgot to change the addresses on).  Since this service is free to everyone, there's not much you can do.  Pay it off ASAP because it will destroy your credit the longer you leave it there.

  5. You can go to consumer credit counseling and they could handle this for you and it is a free service. If you still have good credit I would suggest getting a low interest credit card and just transfer the balance and pay it off. I would still negotiate the amount with them though. A good site to compare the best credit card deals is http://www.CreditCardWave.com

  6. It doesn't matter that you didn't hear from them.  It was your responsibility to make the payment whether you got a statement or not (it's in the fine print, as well as common sense.)

Pay the $660 and take better care next time.
