  1. You're looking for a physician. Dyslexia is a medical diagnosis, and medical needs are generally the responsibility of the family to take care of.

But even a medical diagnosis of dyslexia does not qualify you for squat. In order to qualify for Special Education, you need to have a disability AND require specially designed instruction to benefit from a free and approprate public education, AND meet some other criteria.

They would be looking for an unexpected failure to achieve, for example. If you've missed 35 days of school, you don't ask for missed assignments, and refuse to make up work, your failure can easily be explained by those factors, and the school district has no reason to suspect that you have a disability.

School staff is not qualified to say you have dyslexia or if you don't. They could test you and find that your academic performance in some areas is significantly lower than your cognitive potential. But the eligibility team (probably you, your parents, teachers, the principal, folks who tested you) would still have to reach a consensus, taking into account all I have mentioned above, and more. The specific criteria for Specific Learning Disability vary from state to state, but I'm sure your school has given you a list, or can give you a list if you ask.

  2. Since your already in your last year of school, I wouldn't mess wiht the school to try and help you.

They are too much trouble , they fight not to help you and it would take more than a year to get them to. Even then they won't do it.

You should get help outside of school.

You said the school thought it was a joke, this is normal for schools.

  3. a general physician won't diagnose dyslexia-

go to an educational pyschologist for a diagnosis

  4. First of all, how old are you, and what school level are you in?  My son has reading difficulties, and I just recently had him assessed.  I know that here in California, if the parent thinks the child is having learning difficulties or emotional difficulties in any area, they can request testing.  You need to submit (or your parents need to) a written request stating that you request testing for your reading and writing problems, and give the reason why you think you need it.  Are your grades consistently low, especially in writing and reading?

During the testing, they basically assess what type of learner you are (visual, audio, etc.) and how fast you learn, and from there, they will determine whether your academic achievements match or don't match your learning capabilities.  If the discrepancy is too big (you learn fast but your grades don't reflect it), or if your reading and writing assessment is too far behind your grade level, you will qualify for special ed.

If you are a college student and too old for your parents to request testing, then I would recommend to look up some of the community centers.  Many of them offer reading courses and help for adults or young adults, and they may also be able to refer you to someone to assess you that will not break your bank account.

Hooked on phonics (they have books and also study programs for the computer) seem to have worked well for people I know with dyslexia.

But again, if you are in a regular public school, you parents have the right to request an evaluation.  The pediatrician will not be able to test you for it, but s/he can explain to you how to go about requesting the testing through the school.

  5. You do not say if your parents/guardians requested the meeting, or if your teachers requested the meeting.  If you have never had a meeting to determine eligibility before, they should have done testing. Also, your doctor would be the one who would pick up on the dyslexia. It is usually picked up on at a younger age than 18. My sister was diagnosed at 3. Even if you have dyslexia, accommodations can be made so that you can achieve at school. Talk to you doctor about it before going on a wild goose chase in the phone book.

  6. That wasn't a real test.  The school is required to offer testing by a professional.  Call the county office of education in your area.  Ask for an educational assessment.  Your parents can request this in writing.  If this doesn't work, call the school board.  You can get an IEP, which is an individual educational plan, and they have to help you.  You can also check with Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, as it sounds like you definitely have dyslexia.  www.rfbd.org.  You can get recordings of your textbooks so you can learn through listening.

You're going to need to push for help, but once you get it, things will get a lot better for you.  There's lots of successful people with dyslexia, like Tom Cruise, Cher, and billionaires like Paul Orfalea and Charles Schwab.  Good luck!
