How do I get a good heavy surf board like lacquer finish on a home made skim board made of 1/2" plywood?

My son is making a skim board to take on spring break to South Carolina. It is the third one he's made and they are a lot of fun but we can never seem to get that heavy lacquer wax-able finish like they have on surf boards. We have been using a spar varnish with about 5 coats on each side. Any other ideas?

  1. My brother simply used fiberglass and a lot of resin to seal it.  I don't know that he ever rosins it.  He's been using them for 40 years.
