How do I get a guitar sound like weezer?

I have an Epiphone Dot Guitar, a Dean Flying V guitar, A small laney hardcore amp and a small digitech RP80 guitar pedal.

Is there any way you guys know of that I can reach that thick crunchy sound that weezer uses in their albums, mainly blue and pinkerton?

I have some money but not enough to buy all new equipment so If you know how to use what I have that would be awesome, thanks so much!

  1. Hmm...... Cheap players these days... Anyway, you're going to have a hard time getting the sound though. Rivers and Patrick use an Ibanez TS9 tube screamer. Try.. hmm...  Your best bet is by using the Flying V. You're going to have to find a "Crunchy" overdrive to your multi-effect pedal. When you find it, you're going to need to turn up the bass to about 3 o' clock. Put your mid to 12 o' clock, your gain at 1 o' clock, and that should do it. The key thing to weezer's sound is a lot of bass.

I don't have the pedal, but I have a TS9, and I set it up exactly to the way they had it.

You should start saving up, getting the right sounds = more cash.

  2. Find yourself some "british" settings on your effects pedal. Something that can emulate a Marshall. I would add a tiny smidge of amp distortion to the mix. If you're looking for the Blue sound less amp distortion (1 or 2). If you want Pinkerton, add some more in. Their amps sounded kind of bad and squealy on that album, so shoot for Blue.

The BIG part of their sound isn't their guitars, but their bass. Matt Sharpe used a big ole' thumpin' Orange amp for his tone, which radically changes the timbre of the whole sound they made.

Less highs, fat, mediums, decent lows. low-to-mid Marshall gain (which you will have to get through your effects pedal), and an extra crusty tooth added in with the distortion pedal (you'll be using your amp distortion. Confusing, isn't it.)

Oh yea, use the V with your tone down to 5.
