I just turned 13 in July and I decided I want to help my family out a little on cash because we're not doing so good, so I wanted to get a job but my guidance counselor said in NY (where I live) you can't get your working papers till your 14. I know a year is not a lot but I really need to earn some money now but I don't really know how. I tried to do babysitting but all the parents want older people to babysit, and I don't know any family member I can work for.... Does anyone know something I can do????

  1. do you live in NYC or outside the city? Maybe a paper route? Girls can get them, too, so this might be an idea. And will school start soon for you? You might go talk to a teacher you like and respect and explain your situation to them. This may sound crazy, but it also might be worth a shot--try any construction sites near where you live. Stop in and ask to talk to the boss and again, explain your situation to them. Who knows? They may have a need for someone to sweep up and stuff, that you could do--and no, you wouldn't need any construction "experience". And i would steer clear of all these computer sites that promise you big money for clicking on websites--they are usually bogus and just want a fee for you to sign up. Back at school, let the teachers all know you want to work. Your enthusiasm will be a great asset and maybe a teacher can help. If you like to paint, walk around your neighborhood and ask anyone who has an ugly fence if they'd like it painted (they buy the paint) and you might get lucky. Maybe think about something you like to do that you are good at, or volunteering somewhere that may lead to a job. Of course, being only thirteen your choices are limited, but showing a desire to earn money will be a great plus for you. Finally, does NY have a recycling program? Maybe ask in your neighborhood for any bottles to turn in for the recycling money, or just go for a walk around your house everyday and pick up bottles and cans to turn in--i used to do that when i walked my dog and would always find a bagful of cans and over a bit of time, i collected enough to make some nice pocket change. I like your enthusiasm--good luck! (and don't get discouraged!!)
