How do I get a new license plate?

We just moved to Maine and our Virginia tags are about to expire. I would just renew through VA at their online DMV, but I owe property tax still and I can't afford to pay it until I get the stimulus check, and ours isn't coming until much later since we're getting a paper check. Can I just go to the Maine BMV for now and get new tags for the car? What will I need to get them when I get there? Thanks!

First you establish ME residency.  See http://www.state.me.us/sos/bmv/licenses/...

Then you change over your drivers license and car registration to ME, and you will be all set.

You have to have the title and be a resident to get new plates...to become a resident you have have a job in Maine or lived there for 90 days or more.
